General Information Udine (Friulian: Udin; Slovene: Videm) is a northeastern city in Italy, capital of the historical region of Friuli, in the middle of Friuli-Venezia Giulia region between the Adriatic sea and the Alps (Alpi Carniche), and less than 40 km far from the Slovenian border. Its population was 96,593 in 2005, and 167,000 in the surrounding urban area. Udine is important for commerce, there are several commercial centers, and iron and mechanical industries in the hinterland.
Udine is considered one of the two important cities in the Triveneto along with Padova. The local football club is called Udinese Calcio, founded in 1896, and plays in the highest Italian league (Serie A). Important festivals include the wine-and-food September festival, Friuli D.O.C., and the biggest European festival of popular East Asian cinema, the Far East Film Festival, in April.
